An alternative to a laptop

Postby SteveK » April 22nd, 2012, 5:44 pm

So I like to write on the road, as well as have easy access to the internet and its abundant knowledge. I have a very long adventure coming up (about a year in Europe, Africa, Mid East, and Asia.. Hopefully!), so I decided to take a laptop type thing with me... but what? Well, with the new age of tablet computers coming in, I decided to check them out. I did a few months of research, and found the blackberry playbook. I got mine for $120. This thing is great. It's pretty lightweight, has all the internet capability I need, is easy to type on, and I can store thousands of books on it... That means I can take a lot of wild edible books with me, as well as literally an entire library of books (I just downloaded 150 books on buddhism :D). there is even a built in GPS, which I can download maps for and use offline. There are exterior speakers, and plenty of games, as well. I love to read, but sometimes watching a movie or playing a game is a nice alternative. Blackberry has yet to add the ability to "usb host" (attach devices, card readers, etc.), so unfortunately I would still need a computer to upload camera pictures to the device... But from what I hear, it may come within the next software update.

Oh, and there are two cameras on the playbook. Really nice quality pictures, with the ability to take high quality video. And an hdmi port for use on a TV.

Additionally, i'm going to be bringing a backpacking solar panel with me, which can actually charge the tablet. I'm a fan of green technology, and having the ability to stay out in the bush but still have my electronics working is a gods-send.

It's a new age of backpacking. The bit of extra weight might not be something others want to deal with, but more than worth it for me.

I have the nomad 7 from goal zero. I think I paid $130 for it shipping included. That was the "adventure kit," which came with the guide 10 power pack, and 4 AA's. Really not bad of a system, and decently lightweight and packable.. I believe they're supposed to be able to take a beating as well. I have a tonne of books on my playbook, as well as games, gps maps, and i'll be using it for travel writing... So it will be nice to be able to just sit by the side of a river and do my thing, rather than have to sit by a plug hole for hours while it charges :P

Yea the video we got on the display at work shows the dude slamin the panel off a table corner then throwin it. Can the battery charger/ AA's be used as a power pack for the playbook or do you have to directly charge it?

Unfortunately no. But when you think about it, it just uses the AA's anyway, so that really isn't much power to begin with. You would need a stack of AA's just to get halfway if it were possible, I would think :P They came out with a newer "guide 10 PLUS" powerpack which ups the ampage, and apparently charges ipads... But again, you would need a slew of batteries to make use of that.

I tested the charging capability straight from the panel, and the PB went up a couple percentage of power in about 15 mins... It will take a while, but i'm still impressed that it works. Could sit back and fish in a river while it charges up!

Hmm I figured maybe you could squeeze ten minutes out of it, Ill have to look at the guide 10 set it came in 2 weeks ago, we have the Sherpa pack in the shop which has a 50 watt power pack/ bigger panel that will run most things but is bulky/ heavy. Considering mounting one in my Pelican case with a radio set sometime down the road but may settle for a Nomad 7 panel/ VHF handheld and spare batteries.

Yea I would like to be able to carry such a heavy power pack, but thats more of a base-camp thing I do believe. For backpacking though, the nomad 7 is great. What kind of radio you talkin'?

Thinkin a Yaesu VX-8 series handheld or if I go with a mobile the club has an Icom(dont know model yet) I can have to start, so many options on the market dont really know what I need . Yea the sherpa is a base camp set up but Id consider dragin it along if Im not straight up hiking, probly be camped out all summer too so I could really use it if I get a laptop/ digital camera. Been assembling an expedition ready base camp that fits in a barracks box and down sizing everything else to make my whole life mobile, self sufficient and organized.
