To bring or not to bring...that is the question

Postby imahippy91 » December 8th, 2011, 12:20 am

I have a longboard. its just basically a longer skateboard for you older people :) it is my life. I am into long distance skating. im talking 40 miles a day. I know people who carried a pack, and skated across south america and morroco. check out "Long Treks on Skate Decks " on youtube. I want to bring my long board, but if I meet up with a roadsog/ side kick....I don't want to have to carry it around. and its not something that I can just toss on the side of the road or sell extremely cheap. my board is worth atleast $300.

thanks in advance

peace

You could always mail it home or to a friend.

If you're passionate about longboarding long distances then I say go for it. Just think about what you'll do with it when you want to walk around and be hands free in town and whatnot. Perhaps you can rig up your pack to hold your longboard? Id give it a try. Worst case scenario just send it home.

Why not if it's you're means of transport. I hitched around Europe years a go with a skateboard strapped on the back of my pack - Also served to write your destination as you walk

Check this guy out, he currently holds the world record for longest distance skated

i really regretted not bringing my board in the summer, i guess longboard is different. as long as you can strap it to your pack you should be alright.

Also considering taking my board

Postby wkf » February 21st, 2012, 6:50 am

I have the same predicament, although to call it a predicament sounds negative, however I am happy with either choice, I simply can't decide.

I have been skateboarding for nearly 7 years now and still love it as mcuh as I first did.. Last time I was away for a month I took my board but it lay untouched under my WWOOFer bed.

This time I will be hitchhiking longer distances, through France and Spain and then possibly through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia...

I have had various opinions from my friends on this matter, obviously biased depending on whether they skate or not. Some say I have to take it, missing out on a great park to skate or hooking up with the locals (skateboarders around the world have a tendency to help other skateboarders, its a group that you are instantly welcomed into). Others say it should stay at home, hitch-hiking and travelling in general is for me an escape from everyday life, and my skateboard is very much a part of my routine.

There is also the fact that I will be volunteering in the more mountainous regions in Spain, such as the Sierra Nevada and Picos de Europe. In these locations I can almost guarantee there will be minimal skateboarding activity/locations.

Alongside these factors is the awkwardness factor of carrying it all that way to not set foot on it, with it merely taking up space and weighing me down. However, if I find myself 15 miles from a town, on a flat road, it could be invaluable...but then again there is the fact that I [i:60a9c9720a]will[/i:60a9c9720a] have a 45l backpack on, which mean my movement will be severely limited.

If I had to say whether I am swayed more toward bringing it or leaving it to gather dust at home, I would have to say the negatives seem to outway the positives at the moment.

I would love to get some other people's opinions on this, skateboarders or not.
