Emergency meeting site

Postby jimsjazzz » January 21st, 2012, 1:51 am

Just a thought...
The other day I went to catch up on Digihitch and the site was down. Thankfully, it was only a matter of hours before it was up again, but it got me thinking about the time when the site was closed after Salman's passing. I had no contact info with any other members and couldn't find any other related website where Digihitch members would likely be found, so I just thought it was the end of what I considered an important online community.
If, heaven forbid, this site should ever be lost, or down for a time, is there some other website where we might meet to inquire what's going on? If not, I was thinking, since Morgan's Flickr account is still active, perhaps we can post messages there until a more permanent gathering site is established.

What d'ya think?

it's an idea, but in order for it to work everyone interested would need to bookmark that page.
if someone had the time and knowledge, it would be better if the backend of the site were upgraded.
not criticizing, it's just that the the longer the site is up as is, the less it becomes backward comapatible with newer browsers.
I have a couple linux related issues with the site and everyone gets the false error messages.
I have time, but no knowledge, but I can learn and would be willing.

I like the idea, though ultimately I think it would have to be a similar-interest site that has members on both sites (For instance BritishBlades members talk on BushcraftUK if their site goes down). Either an existing site or one in the future.

Best thing to do is keep this one going!! I really appreciate whoever paid to renew the domain. I don't know the workings of this site but I hope it has a large enough base of admins for one of them to pick up the pieces should it go down.

Having DigiHitch go down made me realise how great this place is, full of like-minded people that are hard to find in everyday life. It's a pleasure!

Not necessarily. Flickr is a popular website that anyone can remember, and most regular members here know who Morgan "Salman" Strub is. That's all you need to find it.
Of course, I'm not suggesting it as a substitute for Digihitch. Just somewhere where we might go to inquire or inform what happened to it, and when it might be back up, etc.
I also checked Facebook but there was nothing on Digihitch. Come to think of it, Facebook may be an even better idea, since who knows how long Flickr will keep Salman's account active.

Digihitch has a presence on Facebook that was started by Mark Strub (Morgans brother). If there any serious announcements to be made in the event that Digihitch goes down, you will probably find some news there.

Like any other PhP Forum, the site is vulnerable to the usual database, code issues and everyone involved in Administering, Moderating and back office work does so on their own time. The response to downtime might not be as fast as you would expect from a site that has a paid Administrator and/or staff.

The site has only gone down once (for more than an hour or two) in the last two years and the membership has increased steadily during that time. It might not be the best PhP Portal out there but it IS the best site on Hitch-Hiking on the Net by far. Long may it last!

Thanks, Frupp.
That's exactly what I was looking for. It didn't show up when I searched FB yesterday.

I like the idea of using Facebook as an emergency meeting sight just in case Digihitch is shut down for a short while.
