2 come to mind off the top of my head...

First one being the gazebo that was (they've since taken it down) in Battery Park at the very southernmost point of Charleston, SC... Amazing views, beautifully mysteriously sexxxyyyy Spanish moss (I <3 spanish moss), and hell, it kept me dry during the torrential downpours the nights that I slept there.

Second - Before I went out to Hawai'i, I had emailed a friend who had spent significant amount of time on Maui, asking her for tips 'n tricks of good places, things, etc. She responded with this very detailed set of instructions for a beach in Hana, behind the school there. At this beach, which consisted of BEAUTIFUL dark auburn sand (the surrounding cliffs were also this colour), there was a large overhang, under which I spent the night. Cooked a meal of Spam and rice, true Hawai'ian style. It was awesome, and I felt a wonderful connection to that good friend, knowing that years before, she had slept under the very same overhang...
Whenever I go on trips, people (namely my parents) ask me, 'Where will you SLEEP??!!!' For me, that's one of the funnest parts of trekking - the treasure hunt for that perfect, FREE, sleep-spot... Ahhhhhh....

Such a good thread!

Finding a good place to sleep is surely a blessing.

In the Czech Republic, we pitched a tent in a small meadow 200m from the traintracks, it was perfect.. Lovely countryside, quiet, warm. We smoked some Amsterdam hashish but then before we could fall asleep, we heard the wierdest noise, a sort of gurgling howl, from the other side of the clearing. Safe to say I didn't sleep for quite a while that night..

Inside Berlin HauptBahnhof, we got a decent nights sleep in a corner, got approached by some police but we just said we were waiting for the first train (which we were) and they left us alone.

And in Vienna, me and my girlfriend tried to get some shuteye outside a huge bank on top of on of the trainstations..the ground was way too cold so we spent the night wandering the streets.

Just outside Hudson Hope, BC under the suspension bridge spanning the Peace River. Theres a cliff at the edge which is alil sketchy and kept me from geting water. To the right is the WEC Bennet Dam roaring away. Dug a hole, lit a fire, set up my packgrill and melted snow to fill my bottle. Dragged a dead tree under for firewood and used it as a barrier to keep away from the cliff after dark. The sun rise was spectacular. Up by the pullover is a concrete sculpture I called a totem that documented local history. First the natives, Alexander Mckenzie passing through, settlers/farming, coming of the railway and at the top a transformer symbolizing the hydro dam. When the wind blew the bridge sings a woeful song, the cables make one tone but the columns are hollow and they reminded me of blowing on the top of a moonshine jug. Slept well compared to the night before in a snow trench behind a bilboard in-35 on the edge of Ft Nelson.

Across from the Washington Monument in DC. I woke up to the landmark right outside my window...and morning buses roaring past.

On a beautiful secluded beach in Hawaii, under the brilliant tropical trees and full moon. <3

A cow pasture above napa valley, CA. A huge cave a couple miles before Virgin Falls, TN (close to Sparta, TN). Security road block at the gates of the volcano Momotombo in Nicaragua (helped the guards feed their pet alligator that lived in lake Managua). Underneath a thatched observation tower high above Lake Aititlan in the Guatemalan highlands. Below the Tetons, and many more I can't think of right now!

A couple nights ago I found a big boat parked in downtown Hannibal, Missouri. It had an "indoor" section. Looked a lot like an RV on the inside. Anyways it was quite comfortable and kept me out of some nasty wind and rain. I took a video inside the boat, but recently found out that my camera doesn't work.

From this summer... Vineyard in northern Italy where we ate grapes and woke up to the guard dog bounding into our 'camp'. We made friends with him to silent his barks. Also a playpen outside a McDonald's; safe dry spot to crash and the cleaning crew woke us up at 830 saying sorry but they had to clean. We were the ones who should have been apologizing but they didn't care at all
