Pipe Smokers!

Postby Kodiakkid » January 10th, 2011, 8:49 pm

Any Pipe Smokers out there?? Not talking about any illegal drug, no salvia, kava kava. Just tobacco and knickknick. What do you like to pack in your pipe? What pipes?

I've got a classy black finished pipe with some woodgrain showing on the stem. I've also got a smooth Meerschaum pipe. I also have a $15 pipe from Walgreens - first one. Still reeks of the vanilla tobacco I used to smoke.

I have a 30 year old traditional pipe my grandad gave to me years ago, it's black in a rugged finish. Then I have a small pipe just for emergencies.
When it comes to tobacco ... I'm still struggling to find something I like the taste off, as I also smoke half-zware rolling tobacco ... still searching though.

I have a meerscham pipe from Turkey that I use for special occasions, a churchill briar pipe, and a regualr old corncop pipe for hitchhiking. Been finding some good strong tobacco here in Brazil. Love it.

I don't smoke often, but it's nice to every now and then.

I actually just bought a couple ounces of tobacco (I like something that's slightly aromatic, but not sweet; probably more for those around me than for myself. Other than that, I'm not picky). I smoked one bowl and then managed to break my briar. When I get to my destination, my uncle may hook me up with a couple of his old pipes. That'll be a godsend. I was going to buy a corncob from the shop I bought the tobacco from, but they were asking too much for very crappy pipes. I'm hoping the tobacco place in my old hometown has the corncobs I used to use which were decent and very cheap.

Speaking again of pipes, I just found a nice little briar pipe here in Belém for only 10 reais. The only thing I don't like about it is that it has a very cheap plastic stem. They were asking a lot for some good pipe tobacco (20 reais for about 30 oz.) but I found some black tobacco that they make themselves that was a very good price (2 reais for 35 oz.)

Not very many people smoke pipes in Belém. It's nice to get the curious stares from passerby.

I bought myself a briar pipe off ebay not too long ago. I want to get into pipe tobacco when I start my next adventure. Just for something to relax with at the end of the day. Do duty frees generally have pipe tobacco? I was thinking of nabbing some after I get to Europe.

Not that I'm aware of, pipe tobacco is like .. extinct.. you have to go to specialist smoker places to get hold of it. But if in England, Holland and Germany (that I know off) you can buy it in weight, instead of pouches.
I highly recommend you try out Old Dublin. Pretty sweet tasting tobacco, has a beautiful aroma to it as well but without that over the top aromaticness that most bring with it.

I'll keep an eye out for that, thanks for the recommendation. There is so much different kinds of tobacco out there, it's almost overwhelming!

I was looking for a new pipe as the awesome one I had, I lost it in a 5000m2 field while bloody stoned O.o
Anyway ... my grandad gave me one of his 40 year old pipes - which did the job but he accidentally broke it ... found a shop where they manually repair it for me without having to even picture buying a new one; as they cost a fortune!
Just thought I'd share my enthusiasm for my pipe coming back to me in one piece! I can once again smoke in pipe! dam cigarettes would of ended my life if I continued smoking that trash!

:D

Edit:
I went to a specialist pipe shop the other day .. just to like try and get informed about the styles of tobacco and how the pipe is meant to be smoked .. as in all honesty I have no idea; I'm learning on my own (as we all do) So she showed me pipes, tobacco and explained the raw basics to me ... one thing she said kind of hit me in a strange way .. but as this is a pipe thread I'll share
According to this lady - Pipes are meant to be smoked only once a day. As the bowl overheats and has to be completely let too cool until the next bowl is packed, if not the inside of the bowl (ie. the wood damages real quick) she also mentioned that the pipe should never actually go out - as again this damages the pipe.
This of course .. is all professional 'real' pipe smoking and pipe preserving people. I mean one pipe a day! are you serious? but yeah .. I thought I'd share with all you pipe smokers out there :)
