Hey hey world.....

Hey everyone. I'm Mike, 19 years old from Detroit, Michigan.

I have recently been contemplating leaving Detroit to go out in the world via hitchhiking. I have done this a few times before in Idaho, near Sandpoint, and Bonner's Ferry. (near the Canadian boarder) I have also picked up a few people here in Michigan to get them closer to where they wanted to go.

My encounters with people who have picked me up have been mostly nice people, but we didn't say much, pretty quiet other than the radio. I also didn't have anything with me other than what I was wearing and a backpack full of clothes and a couple nalgene's. What should I have with me?

There are just so many problems here, I kinda wanna leave for a while, maybe even start over somewhere else. Might sound weird or something to some of you.

I don't know, I guess I was just looking for advice, or encouragement or something, hahaha.

Hi Mike,

1. Welcome to digihitch 8)
2. We won't think you wanting to start over somewhere else is strange
3. Pack plenty of socks and something to sleep in/on, the rest of your gear is strictly personal choice
4. If you go, head north until you can't take the cold, then west until you hit ocean, and then south until you can't take the heat or your passport expires :)

Good luck

Thanks man. I haven't had the best luck any where I've gone. Hence the name, haha. I'm just gonna go until I find a purpose, something I can do right. Might be a good way to put it.
I like number 4. :D

Ps.
Love your website, you should go to Paraguay. I have family there, beautiful places, buildings, nice people. But there's lots of all that down there.

Man, I've been meaning to go to Paraguay. I was right next to Ciudad del Este a few weeks ago but that damned visa fee has been keeping me out for awhile. One country at a time, eh?

I think that's a good plan. Hell, it's what I did. Still can't really give a concrete answer on why I left. Or why I'm still going. I'll figure it out haha.

I hear Detroit isn't the nicest place. Never been, but my Dad calls it De-troilet. Good luck flushing yourself somehwere else.

:)

Yep, all of Central America except Belize. Then a series of boats to Colombia.

And yes, still in Uruguay. Going back to Brazil on Wednesday, though, and I'm looking foreward to it. Uruguay isn't bad, but going from Brazil to Uruguay is like owning a Ferrari and then trading it in for a fully loaded BMW. The BMW is still great, but it still doesn't hold a candle to the Ferrari....

Wow. I'm jealous. I bet you've met a lot of interesting, cool people. Seen a lot of beautiful things. Do you speak Spanish? Or Portuguese?

Starting over, looking for a purpose, or simply trying to do something right is not weird at all. I think many people started out hitchhiking and vagabonding for those reasons. At least I did. I was looking for answers, for truth, and for inspiration. I didnt know what to do with my life and I was eager to find out more about it, before making crucial decisions about my future.

The main answer I found is that there is no answer :D But I will not go into that subject ;)

I just wanted to let you know that the best times I had were when I was not searching, when I did not have any goal, or dream, or anything to fulfill. The best times were when I was there with all my heart, when no worries or thoughts filled my mind, when I gave myself to life and the road, and let it guide my way. It was when I felt the air on my face, when I gazed into the horizon where the road seemed to flow into eternity, and when I let the sounds, the colours, the beauty of my surroundings and the laughter of children deep into my soul. It was the feeling of absolute harmony between myself and the outside. But this, you cannot experience when you are searching. Learn to let go ;)

Spanish: yes.

Portuguese: mais o menos. Still working on it.

same here.. well.. kind of. i found a lot tho.. but every answer brings out more questions.. my main thing i figured out is 'stop looking around cause it might be right in front of you'
