Inner tube from a bicycle. One 6 to 7-inch piece, not butterflied open, if it's not raining, will burn with a good flame for 8 to 10 minutes. Weight = less than 1 ounce / 28g.

I do not recommend this be utilized regularly. Burning and inhaling rubber ain't the best. I carry inner tube strictly as an emergency option for needing to build a fire when everything around is wet.

Don't know if this one has been brought up yet or not but for rides around town standing by a broken down car has helped me a few times...just be sure to make up a good story to solidify their act of kindness...telling them your just using it to get a ride won't go over well... I know

I always tell them the broken down car is a coincidence. This method works best when instead of holding your thumb out, wave your arms above your head at the oncoming car. They will almost ALWAYS stop to help although many of them still won't give you a ride.

I haven't tried it out yet but I was thinking about picking up a set of crutches from the salvation army. My nephew hurt his knee and always got a ride home from school without ever asking. He was just a little kid but I bet it would work. If you have to use duck tape for a bandage, a little baby powder on the skin first. It helps not to rip the wound open more when you take it off.

Its more effective to make eyecontact with the cars. If your not able to do this face oncoming trafic. Walking with your thumb out seldom works. If you would like to blow off some steam because your stuck this might be a good exercise.
Remember a happy hitcher gets rides.
