going west salt lake city/portland/alaska

I am just outside of lincoln, nebraska and was wondering if any body's travelled west on I-80 before to salt lake city and found work along the way?

I Was getting a little bummed out being stuck in a big city, but I am glad to be out on the "open" road now, finally. It is hard for me to panhandle, so working for money is gonna be the way to go. Have made a few dollars stopping at golf courses and collecting balls from the treelines, then selling them to golfers. Anyway, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

I've just left Salt Lake, not really because of economic conditions. My job laid me off and it was a good excuse for a road trip.
But, finding work in SLC can be difficult still, even though Utah has a better economy right now than most other states.
SLC does have a large homeless shelter and a mission, both near each other, as well as a soup kitchen all in one section of town.
It takes over a week to get into the shelter, but you can get into the mission on the chapel floor right away. You just have to be there by 5:30 pm.
You will need a TB test as soon as you get there, the 4th st. clinic is in the same neighborhood.
You won't go hungry there. The food isn't great, but you'll get as much as your belly can hold.
Once you get in the Road Home shelter, you have 90 days, which is repeatable as long as you want.
You have to sign up and either call or go in every day to get on their waiting list. If you miss a day calling in or showing up, you'll have to start over again.
There is work there, but best to stay away from day labor and try to find a real job. Labor Ready and such have many, many guys waiting there as early as 3:00 am for work, if you go that route you'll be spinning your wheels.
SLC is a good place and if you go there, you can possibly get on your feet. I did it there twice.
