planning to adopt a dog before leaving on my first trip...

Postby rejennerate » May 17th, 2009, 9:41 am

Howdy everyone. I'm planning to start living out of my truck in about a month and I'm looking to adopt a dog before I go.
Do you think it is best to adopt a young dog (1 yearish) or an older dog?
Any specific breeds you would or would not want to travel with?
I've heard you can aquire service dog certificates through the internet; is it worth doing?
Any tips on making 'car life' more comfortable for the dog?
Thanks!

You really should get to know your dog before you head out on the road with him or her. Not all dogs are going to be cut out for life on the road as well as others are. That is as much a breed thing as it is an individual personality thing.

I would take a few short trips with a new dog to see how they handle living out of a truck first before I would set out on a long term trip.

I agree with raus.
The dog needs time to get accustomed to you before you leave. You also need to get to know the dog, so you can anticipate potential problems before they arise. Take some time to study dog psycology before you leave, so you can correct issues as they arise. You don't want to be in a situation that you dont know how to correct certain behaviors.

If you're a hiker remember you can't bring dogs into the backcountry.
