Metallica, anyone?

Postby walkoflife » January 5th, 2003, 8:03 pm

Is anyone out there a fan of Metallica, or any other inspirational music of the sort? I find alot of their songs, as well as Van Halen, to be great road tuneage to have with you.

the hard stuff

I don't usually take Metallica or Van Halen on the road with me, but I do like to have some heavy guitar along. Usually it's a compilation tape with Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction and others.

When no one seems to be stopping for me, I blast it through my headphones to get me pumped and bring my energy up.

My best friend from high school was a metal/ hard rock fiend in the late '80s. We'd take road trips with Metallica, Soundgarden, Living Colour, Mudhoney, GnR and a little Megadeth. I'd always try to slip in some Depeche Mode or The Cure, but we'd wind up compromising on the Jane's Addiction album, Nothing Shocking. We must've played that tape ten thousand times....

road rock

Postby duke » January 6th, 2003, 12:44 pm

i usually travel with comps too - although metallica has found its way onto a couple of these tapes. mostly older stuff from the 'ride the lightning, 'and justice for all' days. for some reason, they add some kick to travelling.

van halen makes me think of driving the oregon coast and of breaking down in cave junction. especially 'panama.' and 'hot for teacher' just makes me laugh and think of the after school rock shows that my brother and i ate up when we were young.

but i've listened to everything on the road - one ride i scored through texas was driven purely by alternating blue grass, classic rock and 1950's christmas carols. different trips and landscapes just call for different tunes.

I remember one great ride i had from Messina, Sicily, Italy to near Napoli (Naples) with a young carabiniere (a type of civil guard/soldier) when i just stuck my thumb out at the line of cars waiting to get on the ferries from Sicily to the "toe" of the boot-shaped Italian peninsula. I had been travelling around Sicily for 2 weeks after quitting my job up in the north of the country and i was heading back up to Firenze (Florence) to see friends and the last Swans show in Europe that weekend. We were travelling up through Calabria and its fantastic scenery at high speeds and i put on the Aenima album by Tool which had come out just a few months before. The motorway offers some incredible views and that combined with some of the best music around will always remain with me.
Good times!

Pumpkins sounds like it would be rather motivational as well, Morgan. Anyone up for some good 'ol Willie Nelson, too? 8)

I like to make mix cd's as well (when I can) to get a little variety going.

sounds good to me...

Anyone up for swapping copies of favorite mix CD's or tapes? These are the tunes that stand up to the test of time and always end up back in your player for another round... [all genres] ??

Sure thing! I say we submit a list of what we are sending so we each have an idea what we have coming. How should we set this up?

Well, since Jerry Garcia got thrown into the mix, does anyone here jam to any Blue Oyster Cult or Molly Hatchet while on the road?
