Slab City USA -- Back to the Slabs for New Year's 2005/2006

Postby Salman » August 11th, 2005, 3:28 am

We'll be back in Slab City in Southern California this winter. We hope to see more of you out there, celebrating the open road in the warm climate.

We'll have a printable flyer available in September and other promo goods. Keep checking back for more updates.

And in the meantime, post your ideas and questions. Let us know you'll be there, and what you can do to help make it rock.

Volunteer Request Form

Postby Salman » August 17th, 2005, 2:23 pm

We now have a volunteer form for the Slab City happening. New Year's may seem like a long way off, but we can use some advance help from everyone who may attend.

Go on in and pick a volunteer role you are willing to perform:

http://www.digihitch.com/volunteer-happening.html

Fill out the form, tell us what you can do and ask any questions.

As more of us start brainstorming the event we will all have a better idea of how to pitch in and make it happen.

How to be a hitchhiking volunteer

Postby Salman » September 5th, 2005, 5:32 am

This year at the Hitchhiker Happening we will be introducing the idea of Road Bard and sharing how each of us can volunteer and be more proactive as we hitchhike throughout the world.

Also, read our latest article on digihitch about volunteering-- a call to help in Hurricane Katrina relief in the USA and the continuing tsunami aid in Asia:

Who is invited to the event-

Postby Salman » November 17th, 2005, 4:24 pm

EVERYONE is welcome to be a part of the celebration, as long as each person relates to the ethic of hitchhiking culture and what we've been doing here on digihitch.

For those who are just looking for a place to get drunk and start a fight-- this isn't your place. You won't enjoy yourself and we won't enjoy you.

* You don't have to be a punk, hippie, hobo or wear any other label.
* You can be a college student, professor or high school dropout.
* You can come by car, bicycle, train, foot or thumb.

[b:18621d8267]What are the ages of people who join us[/b:18621d8267]? Between 18 and 80 years old. Kids and younger teenagers are welcome if they come with their parents or guardians.
[b:18621d8267]What are the motivations for coming[/b:18621d8267]? To meet kindred travelers, to explore Slab City, to be a part of something unique or just to chill out for a while.

Some folks will have tons of questions, but we won't give all the answers. Best thing is just to show up. Visit http://gathering.digihitch.com/ for the details we do have, and visit the VOLUNTEER and FAQ links on the page to get more involved.

Looking forward to seeing a lot of you out there on The Slabs.

Spreading the word through Lonely Planet and others

Postby Guest » December 22nd, 2005, 2:08 pm

I have posted about our Hitchhiker Happening event on the Lonely Planet forums.

Keep the topic at the top of their USA forum! Visit the thread here:

http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/messa ... E=1&from=1

Then, reply to it when you can. Tell people that you'll be there, or if you have visited Slab City mention that! Reply with a mention of your own hitchhiking adventure...

[b:38ff1a368c]...whatever you'd like, just keep that topic floating near the top![/b:38ff1a368c]

Do you know other good forums where backpackers and hitchhikers hang out, post a topic there about the Hitchhiker Happening! Then post a link to the topic here!

I have a question: does Slab City get together every year? And how about other gatherings, and how are they put together?

Slab City every New Year's

Postby Salman » April 20th, 2006, 12:21 am

Hey SeekerLabraid, glad you found digihitch and jumped fully in.

We hitchhikers get together every winter at Slab City, and you can expect to see us out there again New Year's weekend. Hardcore 'Slabbers' are there year-round, but many come in RVs, campers, conversion vans or whatever they have during the mild months-- November thru March.

Events are organized throughout the year on a volunteer basis. We'll gather again in June- probably in Arizona. And then again in Canada in late summer. More on these soon! If you or anyone else would like to help bring an event together, just keep your eye on this Happenings forum and pitch in with ideas and project involvement once we make the announcement.
cheers...

With it being this late in June is the Arizona gathering still happening? Or later on?

. . . I've been following the news sounds like theres fires out there near Sedona right now.

Anything more on the Canada gathering?
