Help hitching from AZ to OR with dog...

Postby Peaceloveunity » August 23rd, 2005, 2:52 pm

I'm gonna be heading back home from Tempe (pheonix) Arizona back up to Oregon soon with My dog - I'm thinking about hitching over to Cali and going north from there, as I refuse to go through the southern border of Nevada ever again. I've heard sketchy rumors of SoCal and also about the laws on hitching on interstates in Cali - Not to mention I'm curious as to how having a (very friendly and awesome dalmation/lab) dog with affect my getting rides - any ideas or simple logic? Anything will help...

Also, if anyone has ridden the rails between the two areas, I'm thinking about spotting an empty and looking for a conductor who'll be cool about letting us on - once again, although it sounds impossilbe, has anyone ever freight-hopped with a dog?

i def reccommend taking I-5 or 101 up Cali... how big is your dog? could it ride your lap in a car?

its certainly possible to hop freight with animals, many of my close friends and thier dogs travel in this way. if you go to albequerque and hop north from there, you will hit trinidad, pueblo, denver, and cheyenne. (it may break up in denver). cheyenne is on the overland route, you can hop west from there into green river, ogden, elko, sparks, and then roseville. if youbring your dog on a train bring more water than you could possibly ever need. i suggest multiple 2-liters plus whatever water bottle you currently use. and stock up on dog food. have provisions for at least a week, even if it may be a short ride, because your train could junk out in the middle of nowhere.

but if you havent hopped before, i'd say hitchhiking's your best bet. is your dog trained not to shit in peoples cars or roam around or chew up interiors? keep all this in mind. BTW PM me when you get to the bay area or north of there, im traveling from Ukiah (between santa rosa and arcata on 101) to Medford Oregon and back down on 5, mabye we could meet up at some point.[color=darkred:c116369c08][/color:c116369c08]
