I would be permanently banned from Europe for sure :(
But I would never wear those things to begin with. I was just wondering about camo and if it is more associated with the military than casual wear elsewhere. I opted against it :)

Vintage 501 jeans, army duffel bag, white v-neck hanes shirt, leather jacket, chippiwa engineer boots and newsboy cap in winter/fall. Brando in The Wild Ones vibe.

Dickies, chuck taylors (or vans), wifebeater in warm weather. So cal stuff.

It's important to me, when I travel the states, to wear and use classic American brands on the trip. People recognize it, and respect that.

That's just me though.

I try to look as presentable as possible and clean-looking, though I wear a beard nowadays...I think smiling and generally looking like a nice person with your face and bodily movements when the driver goes by is probably more important than what clothes you are wearing but I know some people have told me they picked me up because I looked like I had a neat appearance and was friendly looking.

I have a yellow and blue striped polo shirt that I used mostly in Colombia to get picked up. I agree about facial expressions needing to be friendly, and general overall good vibes I suppose are the most important. It probably depends from person to person. I guess the more disheveled you look the more likely it is that you're going to meet someone who really did want to pick you up.

I actually end up looking pretty raggedy when I'm hitching. Not neccessarily out of choice, but think it stops people [MOD EDIT] with me so much. Of course it goes both ways, I may miss out some more fussy but safe drivers because they are scared of me. But I've experimented and in places like Turkey I've found it better to look like your not a silly richboy. I always wore a turban to hide my blonde hair too. Worked wonders. I hitched a lot in normal clothes before too. But as the road wound on I ended up accumulating more and more ragged atire. And it seemed to do me good.

Still if I'm hitching in the west for a while I might smarten up again. It really is a complicated topic. Like that thread on here about wearing sunglasses or having a beard or hitching at night. It can help or it can make it more dangerous. I think either way, like all hitchers keep saying, you just have to use your head and your gut and have faith.
