[quote:aa772cd7d1="wanderingrudie"][quote:aa772cd7d1="Rodpod"]I thought about bringing some tortilla shells along. I think it's a good idea. How long will they last on the road?[/quote:aa772cd7d1]

Tortillas will last about a month without going bad. Shells will last even longer, but are likely to break, which makes them effectively useless.[/quote:aa772cd7d1]

I was once camping along the AT in New Jersey and in the bear locker was a skyscraper of tortilla bread. Dated three months before, but it was unopened so we ate it and it was good!

Anyone who has hicthed for even a fair amount of time has probably seen the "just a little" hand sign given by drivers as they pass by (index and thumb held close together hand sign).

I personally have seen those so much, that it makes me want to explode. What I have done in response has transformed the amount of rides I get:

Now, I DO NOT have my thumb out unless I TOO have the "just a little" hand sign in my other, free hand. (ie. thumb in my right hand, and the "just a little sign" held up in my left)

I have had people get me out of the most horrid spots NUMEROUS times and tell me that they dont pick most people up since they feel like they aren't going that far.

Many times, "not going that far" has been a 30-40 minute drive from where they picked me up.

One time my friends and I made signs that said "just a little" (insert direction) with a painted hand doing the sign.

We have all seen that sign so many times that it is classic. Now i always make it back, and it gets me more rides than ever before./

P.s: sleep in the tv room of truck stops if needed. very good shelter

The "just a little" hand sign is given by rides who've obviously hitched before. No need to get all upset about it. If a ride wants to pre-determine that he's going to be a crappy ride, it's better to take their word for it than get angry.

Why? It's a positive communication, it means you're visible, it bolsters your mood and your chances for a better ride soon.

I'd say that if you're bothered at all by passing motorists or their behavior then hitchhiking will be bothersome. I'd also say be realistic, be prepared, be polite, and have a sense of humor.

i wave at people who give me those hand signs, at least they acknowledge me. i always laugh at the uptight people who pretend like there is something going on in the opppsite direction as me. doing a dance for traffic coming the other direction makes the waits less boring.

I am very surprised that no one has mentioned this yet and it may not work out side Australia but here i get most of my rides from truck drivers (especially my long distance ones) and the majority of trucks have UHF radios in them set to channel 40 so they can communicate to each other as they drive and find out where cops ect are.

A few years ago i was helping a friend cleaning out there house after a squatter had been living in there while we were traveling with the show. We found a Uniden hand held UHF and i though i would give it a try next time i had to travel.
I haven't looked back since and my trusty UHF would get my about 80% of my rides now days.

Even if the trucks company does not allow them to carry passengers (which a lot here in Aus don't it is also great to just have a few other people to chat with and find out what what the roads around you are like from people who have just come from that direction.

I am very intrigued by this! Has anyone tried this in the states?

Petroleum jelly soaked cotton balls make an [i:d6b4fdfa0f][u:d6b4fdfa0f]excellent[/u:d6b4fdfa0f][/i:d6b4fdfa0f] fire starter. Or an eye liner sharpener used on a few sticks will get you some wood shavings to use.

A safety pin can, some line, and a fresh dug worm can catch your' next meal

It is said that Mosquitoes are attracted to bright colors. Tan, olive, or beige colors will not get their attention as quickly. If this does not work, crush up a handful of Elderberry leaves and rub them over exposed skin(However, much of the elderberry plant contains a cyanide producing agent; That said, use with caution and Do Not ingest or use over open wounds)

Here in USA it's called "CB" or Citizen's Band radio. It's on the lower AM frequencies (around 27 Mhz) has 40 channels and is an unlicensed band. You can get one at just about any electronics store. Handheld units are usually just kiddie walkie talkies that are on channell 11. Multi channel hand held units are becoming very rare. Channel 9 is supposed to be the emergency channel where the police are listening (seldom if at all) and channel 19 is where all the truckers talk to each other.
