UK to Spain, somehow...

Postby wkf » February 6th, 2012, 11:52 am

Hi everyone..I'm new to digihitch, although not completely new to hitch-hiking.
I seem to have picked up the general consensus that hitch-hiking in Spain is quite difficult, however when I was in Andalucia, we seemed to be able to hitch (albeit it locally) quite easily. I seem to remember getting 3 rides each in a matter of minutes, and one all the way back from town (Orgiva - Valor). Perhaps this was helped by a blonde female companion but I dont know.
As Im (vaguely) planning to hitch-hike/make my way down from Uk to Spain, any comments tips or anything would be appreciated. Or if anyone is going that way at all.

I did it a few years ago in early February. France was extremely easy, cars almost lined up - toll booths work great. Spain got more difficult the further inland I got, with the worst being attempting to get out of Toledo. The first time I tried it was on the edge of downtown, which failed miserably after four hours of waiting in the slushy rainy snow - I was waiting in a really bad location though. What worked the second day was taking the local bus to the real edge of town, i.e. the edge of the suburbs. The waits in Spain probably averaged 45 min, but it was winter and people were probably in bad antisocial moods anyway. I'm sure if you give yourself a little time buffer you'll get where you want to go.

Thanks for your reply, Notapalooka.
I am very much looking forward to starting this trip, first step towards freedom you might say..
Would you say France would be ok even if my French is severely limited?
Ah yes, I was wondering the other day whether hitching is generally easier in the summer due to people's uplifted moods..
