Advice on Route: Edmonton->Vancouver

Postby RedRiverRoad » May 11th, 2011, 2:32 pm

So I am planning my first hitchhiking trip and will be leaving in roughly a week from Edmonton on my way to Vancouver. I'm looking for advice on what route to take. Either I can take Hwy 16 east (Edmonton->Jasper->Kamloops->Vancouver) or I could head south and take the TransCanada (Edmonton->Calgary->Banff->Kamloops->Vancouver). Any opinions would be appreciated, though i will mention i like to avoid the larger cities and have no time limit. If anyone is familiar with hitching out of Edmonton that would also be helpful as i am having trouble finding any info about it, especially east on Hwy 16. Cheers!

some of my friends got stuck in edmonton for more than a day..
if you go south to Calgery check the bussystem towards the airport. dont know the place too well but the airport is already far out of the city.
or check: http://hitchwiki.org/en/Edmonton

however i would go over Jasper if you want to avoid big cities. that route should be fine for hitchhiking.

Kamloops is a really spread out city so try to catch a ride to the other side or you end up walking lots.
a good spot is the travel centre (massive gasstation/truckstop) a little south of the city about 2 or 3 km before the junction transcanadian highway / Coquihalla
the transcanadian is beautifull but can be slow sometimes with longer waitingtimes
