Questions about Weather in the States

Postby banffslovechild » October 15th, 2009, 4:18 pm

Hey! I am coming down from Canada and hitching through the states, and was wondering if someone could help me out with what the weather is like in the south half of, and the coastal states. I am unnsure of the weather differences, as I have never travelled through the states before. Aside from my research, I would very much like information from people who have personally expierenced travel in the states, as I siad in my post below, as I think that source of information is a valuable one in ones research :) I plead ignorance, I really don't know alot about the usa, but i'm hoping too, that this trip will help amend that. Oh, and if at all possible, to whoever answers, could you please provide said answers in terms of clothing necc.? thanks so much!

If you rely on anonymous message board people to supply you critical information and you aren’t doing serious research about snow, nighttime temps, wind chills, seasonal averages, low pressure systems, number of hours of daily sunlight … it’s getting to be the time of year where a mistake might really mess you up.

The only person you should trust is yourself. And from reading most of your previous posts, you should make sure you're fully steeped in the reality of what you're undertaking.

Last night the wind chill in several towns in several parts of the northern USA was below 10 degrees F.

Are you going to be able to handle that?

You realize it will be getting dark before 6 PM and the sun won't be rising before 7 AM? That's a long time to be freezing your ass off in a snow bank or unheated rest stop restroom. Your decision-making abilities might get skewered if you've turned into a giant Popsicle somewhere and a ride finally stops but it's a ride you ordinarily wouldn't be getting into.

Some people will stop for you because they want to help you get where you're going. Some people will stop because you're a chick. Some will stop because they feel sorry for you. Some people will stop because they think you're nuts and/or desperate. Those aren't always good outcomes because you're dealing from a point of vulnerability, even if only in the minds of other people.

It also should be said (see AprilShowerz thread) that women can generally hitch successfully between Point A and Point B any time of year if they have a fundamental understanding of weather systems, if they have their route memorized beforehand, if they know the names of the states they're passing through, if they're committed and disciplined. It's much the same for guys.

Just hitching wily-nily without any of those understandings however, that seems incredibly naive.

Well, I very much appreciate your post, and all the help you have given.
I understand I may sound new to this, but I have hitchhiked before - but, as this will be my first time hitching in the states, I have done alot of research, but I also wanted to get advice and information from people who have experienced the states before, as I think that kind of information is a vaulable resource. Although, I didn't need to research to know what states there are in the USA, thanks for the bold though ;)
