Best Online Maps For USA

Postby hikecrazy » January 13th, 2004, 9:08 pm

If you ever need to find a particular location, street, highway or if you just need to look at a decent map while on the road try going here: www.multimap.com

It's an excellent site with detailed maps which are useful to anybody looking for good spots to hitch. The US is well covered as is Canada and other parts of the world. It's easy to zoom in and out to get an overview of whichever area you need to know about.

Other useful sites are www.mapquest.com and http://maps.yahoo.com. These are particularly useful for finding specific addresses in cities and towns.

If any of you digihitchers have suggestions for other good map websites which we don't have in our Highway Info and Maps section we'd love to hear them.

My fav map site has been mappoint.com. Seems to be one of the easiest to use and has great info. It even tells you about construction that's going on in a lot of places when it lays out the directions.

I either go to mapquest.com or 411.com/.ca for maps.

Google Maps

Google Maps ( http://maps.google.com/ ) has become a great tool for North America maps. Much easier to navigate than mapquest or multimap ... but it's not yet the best for getting directions or finding a specific service.

The thing I like most is that you can move the map around with your mouse, rather than clicking a 'north' or 'south' button to load the next view.

Keep your eye on this map service-- should be the best map tool online within the next year.

google earth has a fair number of local businesses including restraunts, gas stations, truck stops, and it has slightly better functionality than google maps

only problem is that it's a need to install thing

Google earth satelitte images are now available from the google maps website. Just change the terrain look. Even better google has even included "street view" for roads in big cities.
