Bummit: 300 students, Sheffield to Belgrade

Hiya,

I just thought some of you might be interested to hear about a fundraising, hitch-hiking event that some students at Sheffield University in England are organising. It's called 'Bummit to the Belgrade' and is organised to raise money for charity and publicise hitch-hiking as a more environmentally-conscious form of travel.

On the 24th March, 150 students will be leaving Sheffield with the aim of reaching Belgrade in Serbia on 31st March, stopping off in Prague on the way. Another 150 students will be leaving on 27th March, again having a week to get to Serbia. The challenge is to do it without spending more than 15 pounds on transport.

Each student has to raise a minimum of 150 British pounds in sponsorship and the event will hopefully raise more than 50,000 pounds for charity. Most of the participants will never have hitch-hiked before although they are given lots of information and advice from more experienced hitchers before they leave. Last year a similar event successfully saw 300 students making it to Riga, Latvia via Berlin.

For any more information on the event please visit www.bummit.co.uk. Basically it would be lovely if as many people as possible know about the event, raising its profile and hopefully increasing sponsorship and lifts!!!!! Please spread the word and consider sponsoring our 'Bummits' from our website :) Once the event is under way most of us will be wearing blue hoodies so if you drive past us please pick us up because it's for charity!
