Crossing the border from Canada to US unofficially?

Postby 74drifter » July 18th, 2004, 8:59 pm

Anybody crossed the border going from Canada to the US and have recommendations on exactly where to cross? I keep getting turned away at the border and think it would be easier just to find an unpatrolled place at the border and cross. However, I don't live near the border so I'm not really very familiar with anyplaces and I don't particularly want to get caught. If anybody has a surefire place, I'd sure appreciate it.

I would also like to hear of any recent successful crossings. I assume it would be easiest at the more remote spots. I will be doing it in the next few weeks, so any solid advice would be appreciated.

The only account I have seen was "thelegendaryrob" who recommended going from New Brunswick into Maine (Houlton), although as he said, I would never promote the avoidance of customs/immigration officials...

all the best...(thinking seriously about the New Brunswick option)

It makes me wander why they stop some and let others through. I just crossed the border today through Detriot, MI. Of course, I went the opposite direction you went. They only asked me two or three questions, looked at my birth certificate copy, and sent me on my way. Another young backpacker went just before me, and they hassled the hell out of him. Thwey even pulled him into immigration. I thought he wouldn't be allowed to cross, but I saw him on the other side a little later on. Go figure.

While the border is just an imaginary line, the hike across the border can be arduous and extreme. Many more people perish after they cross the border, mainly due to exhilaration and too much premature celebration. For the average trans-border crosser, many exploratory treks are needed prior to the final approach in order to acclimatize the body to the rugged border environment. By allowing the body to slowly adapt through periodization, food will digest better, sleep will be more sound, and tired bodies will be able to regenerate with new cell growth and fresh oxygen.

Because of the danger element, the serious clandestine border crosser will be properly equipped for the final push. Ice axe, crampons, and several bottled oxygen containers cached along the approach route are recommended. It is customary to unfurl a flag at the actual border, and oftentimes joints are fired up.
