I always hear "Lodi" by CCR in my head when I'm on the road. been there and didn't stay stuck, like in the song, just had to sleep the night by the onramp and was on my way in the morn.

One of my favorites!
...and they lay down behind me
to sleep beside the road, till the morning has come,
where they know they will find me,
with my maps and my faith in the distance,
moving father on.

Call Me the Breeze by Skynyrd and Ramblin Man by the Allman Brothers. I was born on the back seat of a, greyhound bus -- those songs get sung as loudly as possible, just like any doors or zeppelin, obviously.
but i'm surprised there wasn't much bluegrass on here! come on, old country medicine show has one of the best hitchhiking songs ever:
Makin my way to the land of the pines,
thumbin my way into north caroline,
starin up the road,
pray to god i see headlights.

was hiking down the trail this morning and it came to me:

Fly By Night by Rush

Why try? I know why
The feeling inside me says it's time I was gone
Clear head, new life ahead
It's time I was king now -- not just one more pawn

Fly by night, away from here
Change my life again
Fly by night, goodbye my dear
My ship isn't coming and I just can't pretend

Moon rise, thoughtful eyes
Staring back at me from the window beside
No fright or hindsight
Leaving behind that empty feeling inside

Start a new chapter
Find what I'm after
It's changing every day
The change of a season
Is enough of a reason
To want to get away
Quiet and pensive
My thoughts apprehensive
The hours drift away
Leaving my homeland
Playing a lone hand
My life begins today

great vibe for beginning a new trip!

One of my busking sets goes like this...

Lost Highway: Hank Williams
LA Freeway: Guy Clark
Can't help but wonder where I'm bound: Tom Paxton/Johnny Cash
Truckin': Grateful Dead
Walkin' down the road: Ozark Mt. Daredevils

the entire "Heartworn Highways" album is killer

Creedence Clearwater Revival: Long As I Can See The Light

Put a candle in the window, but I feel I've got to move.
Though I'm going, going, I'll be coming home soon,
'Long as I can see the light.

Pack my bag and let's get movin', 'cause I'm bound to drift a while.
Well I'm gone, gone, you don't have to worry no,
'Long as I can see the light.

Guess I've got that old trav'lin' bone,
'cause this feelin' won't leave me alone.
But I won't, won't be losin' my way, no, no
'Long as I can see the light.

Some great classics on here!

I have a few more recent artists to add, if anyone is interested..

The Tallest Man on Earth a.k.a Kristian Matsson, from Sweden is one of my all time favourite artists to listen to whilst travelling, Dylan-esque, poetic Scandinavian acoustic guitar. Also one of the best musicians I've seen live.

Willy Mason is also up there for me, I've got his discography on my ipod for this summers adventures.

Devendra Banhart anyone?

Alot of American classics on here, nice...romantic America hitchin' imagery to those songs.
