How to remove decals from bicycles?

Postby kabuki_mono » November 19th, 2011, 7:31 am

I've been looking around the net for some way to remove the decals from my bike as there all over and might attract extra attention, making the bike look more expensive than what it really is.
Nail polish, lighter fluid seem to be the most recommended; but only makes the top layer of the sticker peel, leaving the writing untouched underneath.
Re-painting it is another option, yet that would still leave them underneath and with wear and use/scratches ... will become visible or at least partially.

Anyone successfully removed them?
I shall keep trying to peel them by hand without anything for the time being. :)

A hair-dryer on max. heat and a credit card, armed with copious amount of patience seems to do the trick.

I read about WD-40 but it didn't work for me. There gone now anyway; the hairdryer worked but took forever! a whole day of peeling meticulously O.o I did have 14 decals in total though ....

Cheers anyway :)

it depends on what bike ( aka who made it) like TREK for instance, you cant; it's under the gloss layer. But like a Surly? No prob, I actually used my thumb nail, but if you have soft nails, the back edge of a butter knife does a treat. Steep angle, so as to not scratch the paint. It's how I did mine.
