At our local bike shop here in Nashville they sell a tent that uses your bike as tent poles. It fastens to the handlebars when you are riding so you don't have to worry about carrying it. They want 100 bones for it but that might we worth it for some.

I have never hitched with my bike but I have thought about it.

[quote:f9c41b0852="UnionJack"]I was wondering how realistic it would be to Hitchhike with a Bicycle? Has anyone done it?[/quote:f9c41b0852]

I hitched with my bicycle from Newfoundland to Nova-Scotia to PEI to New-Brunswick and into Quebec.

The reason was I wanted to spend a month on the road, but the distance would have meant 2 months cycling.

So I compromised, cycled bits (equiped for touring) and hitched the long boring bits.

It was the best hitching ever, as with the bike you are NEVER caught in a hell spot! you simply ride out of any city or away from any blind corners or bad neighborhoods and pick the absolute best places on the HWY.

Essential though, my saddle bags were quick to remove and I had a bungy cord to hold the trunk down once my bike was in.

I recommend it to everyone!

I have been cycling around europe for half a year or so, and have done quite a bit of hitch-biking along the way. For sure its possible. The only hurdle for me, was psychological. I felt like it would be a bigger hassle etc...

in reality though, ive never had to wait more than half an hour anywhere, fully loaded bike and all. I mean, FULLY loaded. I carry everything i own, which means camping gear, cooking gear, camera and video equipment plus clothes etc..
a lot of my rides have been from tiny cars too! when im waiting on the highway, i take off my panniers, and the wheels (sometimes just the front) and its amazing what you can fit in those little european compact cars!

Mostly i think my drivers think my bike is broken - which is fine for me :) and for sure finding the good spots is MUCH easier, and getting left 10km out of a city is no sweat. niiice! hitch-biking rocks!

just got done with my 3 month San Francisco to Boston trip this summer.

and i had to hitch about 5 times because of wheel probelms (replaced two wheels on the trip) and from what i have experienced. you get picked up very fast with a bike. the longest we had to wait was about 1.5 hours and the shortest being 15 mins.

I also just finished a 5,000mile criss cross county bike tour this year. I had no problems hitching with a bike and trailer when mechanical breakdowns caused me to. Some waits were short and some long. Peace

This post is seriously old ... but here's my two cents for what it's worth.
I just cycled through France (thousand and change Km) while I didn't hitch with my bike as that was not my purpose. I was offered an awful lot of rides, more than one would imagine!

Edit: I shall add a little extra. It is easily done in Portugal and Spain. I guess all it comes down too in reality is how fast you want to get to where you want too go. As the times I have hitched with my bike ... the same thing kept going over and over in my head ... Why the fuck arn't I cycling.

its shamelessly easy in thailand as well. it was even easy for 2 persons with our bikes and backpacks and everything. i'd say, outside bangkok and towards the north of the country, 70-80% of the cars were pick up trucks, there were so many of them it felt like impossible not to find a ride. and the people were... well, let's say, super helpful. the most i waited was about 30 minutes and the less about 30 secs. i think that, at least in some countries, standing at the side of the road with your bike makes people think that you might have a prob or something, so it actually increases your chances catching a ride with people that wouldn't normally stop.

Has anyone done any interesting travel on a bicycle lately?

If so, post your story here!
...and they lay down behind me
to sleep beside the road, till the morning has come,
where they know they will find me,
with my maps and my faith in the distance,
moving father on.
