I was hitchhiking from Europe to Africa. If you're going to Europe first you can catch a really cheap ferry from Napoli in Italy directly to Marocco or Tunesia. If you don't get a cabin it's really really cheap, just get there and then you can still collect some money for getting this cheap ferry ticket.
It's about 40 Euro.

well thanks for the tips, everyone

i got a little homesick and intimidated and decided not to go
although i later met a guy when i was in pittsburgh who said he'd had acquaitences who had 'hitched' a freight to morrocco or other w. african nations from new york city. he said it wasn't that hard, you just had to show up a second or third day to let them know you're legit.

i still want to go to aftica but have given up on this method
besides, i live in california now

sorry my reply to this is late but i am now researching a freight hitch trip now.
this summer i worked with a girl from portugal, a total dreadlocked hippie who hitched a frieght from panama to australia. she said it was no problem, took her 2 days to find and she ate heaps for free and had her own room. she was tiny, but well cultured and said there was never a problem, she set a hammock on the dock and read in the sun. she helped cook and clean, and the men were thrilled.
im an adventurous will gadd/bear grylis type and i cant forsee a problem doing it. im looking into major ports and other travellers.

after hitching australia, she also hitched a boat to fiji, to thailand with a aman. she helped for food and sailing, but she said he was kind of creepy, but no real threat. an innocent, lonely man.
this world is tiny and our oyster, we can do whatever we want.

im planning a either a hitch to chile from canada or a hitch to the us, and out of a major port to africa.-world cup baby.

if anyone else can give me ideas, references or help with cargo hitching, id be forever in debt.

I have a friend who walked around a marina, talking to owners of small private yachts. He was able to get a job as a “cabin boy.” He not only was able to sail along some of the west coasts of North and South America, but was able earn enough to pay for a semester of college.

I was in Southampton, England back in October of 1980. I went to four shipping companies to see if I could get on a ship heading for South Africa. They said no. I met an older guy on the street and told him that I was looking to get on a ship to South Africa; he said it wasn't going to happen; too many sailors out of work at the time.

I hitchhiked to Wales the next day.

The moral of the story: If you can't make it to South Africa, then go to Wales. Wales is really beautiful.
