Lone female hitching in Argentina?

Postby inargentina » October 31st, 2005, 5:28 pm

I am in El Bolson at the moment and was hoping to hitch either south or north to Beunos Aires. Is it safe for a girl by herself?

Hopefully you will get some tips about Argentina here on digihitch, but also visit:

(Today, Oct 31, the site is down. It should be back up tomorrow)

Any Argentinian hitchhikers here?

I've heard only bad things about hitchhiking in Buenos Aires. That Argentine site also suggests avoiding BA. I guess it's okay if you are going there, but probably not a good idea to try to hitch inside the city.

Planning on going around Argentina when I get through Chile. :)

I've heard a lot of bad things about long-distance hitchhiking in Argentina from the locals, especially that truck drivers won't pick you up. I've only done short-distance (under 50kms), and I personally thought it was pretty easy. Even got one unsolicited ride while I was hiking back to my camping site.

I'd say: find a good spot near wherever you are now, and try it out for as long as it feels good. For me, that's about 1-1.5 hours. Don't be afraid to take a short ride. For me, the energy from talking to people translates into being okay with waiting for quite a while again. ç

Good luck!

Hi guys,

my name is Juan. For 3 years I have been coordinator of Autostop Argentina, and hitche some dozen of thousands of kilometers there. Gettinmg long rides is not only possible but the average case, since trucks travel normally big distances and some cities are located even thousands of kilometers from each other. It is perfectly safe to do it, just don't hitch from a poor slum out of a big city like Buenos Aires or Rosario. The rest of the country is perfectly safe, just common sense you know.

A girl hitching alone is no problem also. The same as hitching alone in Europe or elsewhere. Truck drivers will pick you up very frequently, and will NEVER ask for money. Waiting times, should be said, are longer than in Europe for sure, and middle class people is a bt afraid of giving lifts due to the crime they see on TV, but don't worry, we travel our country widely and there is no place that cant be reched by hitch hiking.

Good Roads
