What to bring: Backpacking list for my dog

I'm going to be hitching out of ohio to montana in less than a week and I'm bringing my 7 month old german shepherd. He is well behaved and we love eachother very much so want to make this trip as good as i can for him as well. I'm not really worried about the trip as much as I am worried about what to bring for him.

If someone could post some kind of doggy checklist that would be great.
(sorry if there is already a post like this that I looked over on accident.)

i recomend a blanket for the pooch, 2 litter bottle of water and at least 10 pounds of food. oh yea dogs need chew toys. or just toys period.

Dogg backpacks can be found at the larger chain petstores, or the ocasional smaller store.

I don't know what the US equivlent is, but i got a doggy backpack for only £2 at a car-boot sale. (My mum says they're a bit like flearmarkets crossed with garage sales)

As for stuff to bring, travel water and some toys, you may need a blanket depending on if you share with them and what the weather is like where your going. You can forgo bringing dog food if you're up for campfire cooking them some meat/fish and rice, but i guess dry food bags are probably easier.

I realize this is an older thread, but I'm hoping this information gets to you in a useful time frame - and if not, it will help someone else.

YOUR DOG IS NOT OLD ENOUGH TO BE CARRYING A BACKPACK. Do NOT put a backpack filled with anything other than crumpled paper on him. His growth plates aren't closed, and especially given his breed (a slow maturing breed prone to orthopedic problems!), you can SERIOUSLY hurt him.

This is the list I made for when I go on my first trip for my dog.

Frontline Plus (6 months)
Heartgard (6 months)
Dog chow (5lb or 10lb bag- whatever suites you)
Nutrical (High calorie paste for pets- most dogs loove it.)
Food bowl
Water container

-Pig ears or rawhide (Don't give too much- it expands in the tummy.)
-Hooves (Not as tasty as pig ears and smell funny but do last longer.)
-or Bones (Everyone loves marrow!)

Even though you wont be able to use this till your pup is about a 13+ months I recommend using a dog backpack with quick release panniers outfitted with many a reflective strip. When we're sitting by the side of the road I can snap it off his back so he doesn't have to deal with the weight all that much cause he only has three legs and I am obsessively worried about his joints also so he doesn't have the bulky pack on if we have to cramp in for a ride. Also I keep my valuables and mace in his small removable pack and keep them on my lap in the car.

These I bring for my border collie
-I use a big oversized tin camping cup for his water dish, it doubles as my coffee cup
-water bottle for the pup since i pour back whatever water he doesn't consume and i don't like doggy backwash that much
-I use my cooking pot as his food dish only feed him once a day since he's a mooch and gets many tidbits from people who find him irresistible
-a doggie poncho because nothing is worse than sharing your sleeping bag with a wet dog
-a towel to remedy above situation
-Leash
-squeaky
-boots, my dog has sensitive pads and refuses to walk on hot asphalt so its either carry him or make him look like a tard sorry bud
-heartguard plus since you'll be sleeping outside increasing his exposure to mosquitoes.
-a small bag of de, this is holistic flea prevention you sprinkle it on them every 2-3 days and it kills the fleas and ticks by scratching their exoskeletons and drying them out
-5lbs food unless your going somewhere remote don't lug around extra weight
-pick up chews and replace toys as you go
