Kerouac's "On the Road" on video or DVD

Postby skharitich » December 28th, 2004, 2:57 pm

Hi guys! Have you ever seen a film based on Kerouac's "On the Road"? Does it exist? Has it ever been filmed? I searched most online shops, but to no avail. Any clue? Thanks!

Films featuring Kerouac and the Beat Generation

Postby Salman » February 9th, 2005, 11:55 pm

Though there hasn't been a full telling of On the Road in film yet, there have been others that feature Kerouac or the Beat Generation. Here are a few:

[b:cce20593bb]Heart Beat[/b:cce20593bb] - http://www.digihitch.com/amazonroad-6300271730.html
This is based on Carolyn Cassidy's memoir of Jack Kerouac and her husband, Neal Cassidy. She was very unhappy with the film, but it does tell part of the story.

Mostly about Burroughs and Ginsberg when they were in Mexico. An interesting look at the far side of beatness. Kiefer Sutherland plays William S. Burroughs.

Johnny Depp as Jack Kerouac?! Yep, and it works. This is a documentary about the beat generation, told with characterizations by Depp, John Turturro (as Ginsberg) and Dennis Hopper (as Burroughs).

No new word about the On the Road film. Although Russell Banks (author of Affliction and The Sweet Hereafter) wrote the screenplay, so it should be pretty damn good when they finally do release it.

There's a movie about Neal Cassady, and doesn't have Kerouac in it except for the letters he writes him.. But I can't for the life of me remember it's name... Probably made in the 80s me thinks, or maybe 70s. I just remember the parts near the end, when Cassady is about to settle down, meets a nice girl and her dad is going to give him a job... On a whim he leaves their house deciding he needs to go get his one good suit and a friend has it.. Anyways, things get messed up. He runs into his friend but also runs into a teenage girl he was dating.. Gets set up, thrown in jail for statutory.. He finally gets out of jail the next day, missing his job appointment.. He can't remember where the girl's house is, finally remembers.. Walks up to the door, is about to ring the doorbell, changes his mind walks up to the first car he sees, hotwires it and drives it away... That scene is great, always the perfect image of the beats to me.. If anyone has seen this, let me know the name.

There's a film coming out next year starring Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley. I guess a trailer will be released in the not too distant future, but here's a bit more info and pics - On the Road film
