From my own experience being homeless for 10yrs I must Agree with the topic. No smarts so they live out behind walmart or near a mission if they are not allowed due to issues, but can eat a meal a day there. That is not living.Mere exsistence.Day to day.Bummer, I can not imagine living that way.I carried a tent and all survival gear to not be a burden to others.I was so good at living outside the grid that when I did tell people that I was homeless I was usually called a liar. Why? Because I am clean, not a drunk or druggie, well educated and spoken and I CARE about others.I never fit the profile of homelessness.
I now am living in a small community on the Colorado River and am happier than I have been in so many years. Now people that I talk to have a hard time believing that I was homeless for so long.Go figure.

That happened to me last night at the shelter, I usually camp even when its -30c like it was last night but was too tired after work to hike out of town. This old drunk native asked me how long Id been in town and proceeded to call me a lier repeatedly because "he lives on the streets and hasnt seen me". Ive been here 14 months, outside for 7 and seen him hundreds of times always by the shelter or liquor store but always passed by on my way to something meaningful. These old drunks demand a meal and a bed, treat the shelter workers like crap and when theyre kicked out for drinking in the bathroom or violence they demand the police drive them to detox. They always yell about how theyl freeze to death even on a night it was -5c... I come get a meal, say thank you, try not to get in a fight while I eat and warm up, then trek an hour out of town to my camp where I have to dig out and cut wood just to melt snow for water.
